Learning Support

Saint Cyril of Alexandria’s Learning Support Program is an optimistic program that firmly believes that all students have the potential to learn. The primary concern is to educate youth in a supportive environment that best meets their academic needs. As a result, the main focus is on the child’s ability, not their disability. An ongoing partnership with the learning support teacher, the regular education teacher, and parents will be established with the purpose of helping children succeed in both the learning support class and the regular classroom. We value the parents and guardians who serve as the primary educators and advocates for their children.

The purpose of the Learning Support Program is to teach students in the subject areas of Language Arts and/or Mathematics in a manner that meets each child’s individual learning needs in a small group setting.

 

Program Admission Qualifications

  1. Must have Delaware County Intermediate Unit or qualified outside psychological testing.
  2. Admission according to need and limited class size.

 

Evaluation

An Individual Education Program will be written for each child after admission to the program. Yearly goals and short-term objectives will be determined for each student. This will be completed after the special education teacher has ample time to assess the individual needs of the students.

Your child’s success in the program depends on teachers, students and family working together. Everyone has an important role in the process. The following are roles utilized in the Learning Support Program:

Role of the Special Educator

  1. To individualize instruction that fosters the student’s personal growth.
  2. To recognize the range of individual learning needs, styles, strengths, and abilities.
  3. To enable each student to experience academic success through the use of an adaptive curriculum in a supportive learning environment.

Role of the Student

  1. To cooperate with teachers in all areas.
  2. To respect teachers and peers.
  3. To complete daily work on a timely basis and ALL homework assignments.
  4. To develop positive attitudes, self-confidence, and an appreciation of individual gifts and talents.

Role of the Parents/Guardians

  1. To serve as positive role models and advocates for their child/ren.
  2. To communicate with teachers on a regular basis through the use of communication folders and conference schedules.
  3. To monitor DAILY the child’s homework assignments and reinforce study skills.
  4. To equip the child with the books and supplies necessary for a productive day at school.
  5. To support the teachers in all areas of learning.
  6. To contact the learning support and/or regular education teacher if there are any questions regarding homework or projects in either classroom.

Role of the Regular Educator

  1. To establish an ongoing partnership with the special educator concerning the adaptive curriculum for each student.
  2. To communicate effectively.
  3. To provide for students’ participation in regular classroom functions upon return from the learning support classroom.
  4. To instill within each student a mutual respect and understanding of learning differences.

Scheduling

Students in Learning Support will attend religious enrichment, physical education, library, music, and computer classes with their grade level. Students will attend Mass, Prayer Services, and other special events with their homeroom.
